We Florida's top experts in rodent control. We are not a typical Tampa rat removal or pest control company. We don't treat rats or mice like insects, because they are not - they are mammals! You can't just use poison to get rid of them, like you can with insects. Unlike most Tampa pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas, no matter how small, with steel
- Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
- Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
- Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
- When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires
Tampa Rodent Removal Tip:
Are Rats Hibernating Creatures?
During winter, the temperature plunges, and food sources dwindle. To survive, many species enter their burrows or nests and hibernate through till spring. Surviving on the food they've stored up, and reducing their energy expenditure is ideal for making it through to more abundant times.
Not all animals hibernate though. Birds, from pigeons to owls, can be seen flying around throughout the winter months - this gives us a clue about rodents and other pests. If the owls are flying, then there must be food for them to eat.
There is! Rodents like rats and mice don't hibernate either.
For some, this is surprising. After all, these small animals have a large surface area relative to their size. That means they radiate off a lot of heat. There's a general rule in nature, the smaller you are, the more food you need as a proportion of your body mass to survive. In winter, this simple rule gets taken to the max.
So, how do rats survive the cold plunge?

However, that doesn't mean they won't still hunt for food. If they smell food, they'll quickly descend upon it. Rats aren't fussy eaters. They'll eat fresh and moldy food, including rotting meat, grains, eggs, cheese, even their own droppings. By being so remarkably adaptive, they can be a nightmare to get rid of.
Stay in warmth
The next strategy for surviving the cold spell is to head to where it's warmer. Rats are excellent burrowers. They'll carve out a remarkable network of tunnels to keep warm. If able to, they'll locate their tunnels adjacent to buildings or homes. These structures radiate heat, keeping the rat burrow warm. They're also likely to be found in subways and sewers. The decomposition in the sewers provides some heat, while the body warmth of passengers heats the subways.
However, ideally, rats will find an even more luxurious habitat to rest through the summer: your home.
With food in abundance and warmth through till spring, there's no better place for a rat to live in comfort than in your home. Therefore, securing your home from rats before winter is vital. No matter how small the opening, if they sense an opportunity, they will take it.
Avoiding rats in winter
Preventing rats from being attracted to your home is the best line of defense. Follow these simple but effective tips:
- Prevent food scraps: Rubbish bins should be secured with no bags left on the open ground. Food scraps, no matter how small, should be cleaned and thrown out.
- Remove shelter: Boxes and garage clutter are ideal for winter resting, being both warm and safe.
- Close up holes: Anywhere that is warmer inside than outside needs to be made secure. That means inspecting the entire structure for holes.
- Use repellants: Electronic repellents give off an extremely high-pitched noise beyond the human hearing range to ward off rats. However, in time, most rodents will ignore the noise as comfort beckons. Alternately, natural repellents that smell or taste bad, like peppermint oil or castor oil, can be used to prevent an infestation. These must be regularly reapplied.
